The Truman State University athletic department carries a secondary athletic insurance policy on all its athletes. This policy covers injuries that occur while participating in official practice activities. The athletic department and the athletic training staff highly encourage all athletes to carry regular medical insurance.

Description of Truman's Athletic Insurance:

1.  Truman’s Athletics Department carries a secondary insurance policy for all athletic injuries.  This insurance covers injuries that occur during athletic practices and games.  This secondary policy is designed to cover expenses not paid by your personal insurance.

 2. The insurance plan covers injuries incurred:

                A.  During OFFICIAL practices and games (not during unofficial practice, pre-season, intramural, etc.)

                B.  On official school trips (i.e. traffic accidents, etc.)

                C.  Only during athletics, not personal accidents

                D.  ONLY INJURIES, NOT ILLNESSES (i.e. asthma, influenza, skin rash, headaches, etc.)

                E.  Only during the athletic season.  Pre-existing conditions are not covered.

 3.  The NCAA carries a Catastrophic Injury Insurance Program that covers student-athletes who are catastrophically injured while participating in a covered intercollegiate athletic activity.  The policy has a $75,000 deductible and is supplemental coverage in the event of a catastrophic injury.  More information on this program can be found on the NCAA’s web-site at www.ncaa.org.

 4.  We strongly recommend that students have coverage through a primary health insurer.  College students can incur significant out-of-pocket expenses for non-athletic related illnesses or accidents.  Please also be aware that many insurers drop primary coverage of dependents once they reach the age of 21.  This can often be avoided simply informing the insurer that the dependent is a full-time student.
