In an effort to stronger and faster, many athletes enhance their diet with a variety of supplements. The NCAA and Truman State University are concerned about the safety of these supplements. While many supplements are safe, there is also a large selection that has dangerous side effects. The NCAA has developed a list of drugs and supplements that it considers either dangerous or preformance-enhancing. These drugs and supplements are prohibited by the NCAA. Although some of theses prohibited substances seem obvious, such as steroids and street drugs, many can be found in diet or weight-lifting supplements available at the local Walmart or nutrition store. It is the athlete's responsibility to be aware of which substances are prohibited. The NCAA performs random drug tests throughout the year and at championship events. A positive test will cost an athlete their eligibility.
