Primary Partners Project Earth Week Activities

The P3 (Primary Partners Project) Activities continued through Earth Week (April 20-24, 2009), with Truman State University Health Science students assisting with a variety of projects at the Kirksville Primary School.  Dr. Janice Clark Young supervised the P3 projects, with Mrs. Celeste Holbrook’s HLTH 362 Environmental Health and members of the Student Public Health Association, and HLTH 290 students assisting in the following activities:

  1. Each morning Truman students assisted with the collection of empty cans for the aluminum can drive.  Children and parents brought aluminum cans to school and Truman students weighed and tallied the amounts.  Over 670 pounds were collected and the money received from the aluminum cans will be used in the butterfly garden at the school.
  1. Environmental Buddies (Truman Health Science students working with the second grade classes taught by Mrs. Gordon and Mrs. Lechner) finished their educational activities on the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, and recycle).  Truman students and Mrs. Lechner’s class made paper from recycled paper.  Once the paper pulp sheets dry, the second graders will write a poem to their mother and decorate the sheet.
  1. On Friday, April 24, all second graders attended an assembly about the rain forest—a culminating activity for their science study.  After the assembly, students were asked to continue to be a friend of the earth by reducing waste and litter.  Truman Health Science students were there to give each second grader a reusable grocery bag donated from Hy-Vee.
  2.
