Get Involved!

So you may be asking, how can I get involved with other students in my major, as well as other students on campus? The Health and Exercise Sciences Program encourages involvement with three organizations that contribute to the development of our majors, Eta Sigma Gamma, Phi Epsilon Kappa and Student Public Health Association. We also believe that becoming involved with undergraduate research provides numerous opportunities to work with faculty members on projects inside and outside of class.

Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate research is yet another way to get involved with other majors, faculty, and even colleagues from other universities. If you have an interest in research, you can easily find a faculty mentor who has expertise in that subject area, and begin proposing and developing a project. After the project is complete, you may be interested in presenting the study at the annual Truman Student Research Conference, at a local, regional, or national professional conference, or submit your work for publication in a journal. Here's what a recent graduate has to say about research...

"I think the most rewarding or exciting aspect of doing the research and presenting it was the impact the experience had on my acceptance into graduate school. For 4 years I think the HES students are told how unique our program is in that there are wonderful opportunities to develop, conduct, present, etc. research as undergraduates that many students at other universities don't have the same opportunity to do. Now that I've had the chance to look back at those research and other similar academic experiences, I've realized that they do indeed make a significant difference in what a undergrad brings to their graduate application and program." --Brandonn Harris, Fall 2002 graduate, Exercise Science/Psycho-Social pattern
