The Personal Well-Being Requirement of the Liberal Studies Program requires students to complete one of the following 2 course combinations: HLTH 195 Lifetime Health and Fitness AND HLTH 196 Lifetime Physical Activities OR MS 100 Introduction to Military Science I AND MS 101 Introduction to Military Science II. However, some majors (such as the Health & Exercise Sciences) may have specific requirements to fulfill this portion of the Liberal Studies Program.
Here you will find information regarding the HLTH 195/196 course combination. Students must enroll in one section of HLTH 195 and one section of HLTH 196 during the same semester.
HLTH 195 Lifetime Health and Fitness (1.5 credit
hours)
The purpose of this course is to integrate material from human
physiology, psychology, sociology, and nutrition to present an
interdisciplinary framework for disease prevention and health
promotion. The course focus is to promote a behavioral lifestyle
change in which students integrate into their lives patterns of
physical activity, health, and well-being.
HLTH 196 Lifetime Physical Activities (0.5
credit hour)
This course is designed to introduce the student to a pattern of
lifetime fitness and physical activity through a variety of activity
modes. Regardless of activity mode, concepts of aerobic and
anaerobic conditioning techniques will be explored. Where
appropriate, issues of safety, equipment, theory, technique and
other factors will be introduced.
Each semester, we offer several sections of HLTH 196, each with a different activity focus. Check here for a description of HLTH 196 courses offered during the Fall 2008 semester.
Athletes who enroll in a Varsity Sport participation course (ES 102-114) are allowed to substitute this credit for the activity component, HLTH 196. Students must see Carolyn McCarty (carolynm@truman.edu) in the HES Program Office, PB 334, to apply for an override (which will give permission to enroll in HLTH 195 without HLTH 196).
